BENGALURU — The 19th season of the Indian Premier League kicked off under lights at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium on Saturday, with defending champions Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) taking on the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH).

RCB captain Rajat Patidar won the toss and, amid a roaring home crowd, elected to bowl first. The decision sets the stage for what pundits predict could be a high-scoring affair on Bengaluru’s famously batting-friendly pitch with short boundaries.

“The pitch is also batting-friendly, and with short boundaries, this match is going to be high-scoring. 180 is a normal score here, but 200 is considered safe,” one pre-match analysis noted.

Both sides are dealing with significant injury absences. SRH will be without their premier paceman Pat Cummins, while RCB miss the services of key bowler Josh Hazlewood. The match also sees debuts for RCB’s Duffy and Abhinandan, with Salil featuring in the Sunrisers’ playing XI.

The opening contest marks the start of a long campaign for RCB, who will be looking to become the first team to win back-to-back titles since the Chennai Super Kings in 2010-11. SRH, led by Ishan Kishan, pose a formidable challenge with a power-packed top order featuring the likes of Travis Head and Abhishek Sharma.

In Canada, the match is available via streaming services carrying the official IPL broadcast. Jio users in India have been offered free streaming on JioHotstar as part of promotional plans.

The 2026 season begins under a cloud of off-field debate regarding player compensation, following recent comments by former player Abhinav Mukund who argued IPL players are “underpaid” compared to the league’s soaring commercial value.

In other team news, Chennai Super Kings have confirmed that legendary former captain MS Dhoni is likely to miss the first two weeks of the season as he recovers from a calf strain.

This is a developing story. The live score will be updated as the match progresses.
