Medvedev Cruises Into Indian Wells Fourth Round After ‘Hollywood’ Journey
Russian tennis star Daniil Medvedev has powered into the round of 16 at the BNP Paribas Open, extending his winning streak to six matches with a dominant performance just days after a dramatic journey from Dubai that he described as “something resembling a Hollywood movie.”

The former world No. 1, currently ranked 11th, needed just 78 minutes to dispatch Argentina’s Sebastián Báez 6-4, 6-0 in third-round action on Tuesday, 10 March. This followed a straight-sets victory over Chile’s Alejandro Tabilo (6-4, 6-2) on 8 March.
“I’m just happy to be here and playing,” Medvedev said in a press conference after the Báez match. “The last week has been unusual, to say the least.”
Medvedev’s arrival in California was delayed after he and several other players were reportedly stranded in Dubai for several days due to regional travel disruptions. The 2021 US Open champion finally arrived in Indian Wells on 4 March, calling the experience “dramatic.”
“It made me feel like I was in a Hollywood movie for a bit,” Medvedev told reporters, detailing a complicated multi-leg journey.
Carrying Momentum from Dubai
The Russian carries significant momentum into the desert tournament, having just won the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships. His title run there included victories over Tallon Griekspoor and a dominant semi-final win over top-seeded Canadian Félix Auger-Aliassime.
Medvedev’s career hard-court prowess is well documented, with a 312-109 record (74.1%) on the surface. His 2026 season record now stands at an impressive 15-3.

Next Challenge: American Alex Michelsen
Medvedev’s path continues on Wednesday, 11 March, against 21-year-old American Alex Michelsen in the round of 16. The two have never met on the ATP Tour.
“Every match is different, especially against someone you haven’t played before,” Medvedev said. “I’ll need to be focused from the start.”
A victory would move Medvedev one step closer to adding a second Masters 1000 title to his 2026 haul and potentially setting up a quarter-final clash with higher-seeded opposition.
