Braga Books Quarter-Final Berth, Villa Defends Lead in Europa League Drama

TORONTO – The UEFA Europa League quarter-final picture is coming into sharper focus this week, with one team securing its passage and several others fighting to join them as the round of 16 concludes.
Portuguese side Braga became the first team to advance on Wednesday, staging a dramatic comeback to overturn a first-leg deficit. After losing 2-0 away to Hungary’s Ferencváros last week, Braga roared back with a 4-0 victory at home on 18 March 2026, winning the tie 4-2 on aggregate.
“It was a fantastic response from the team,” Braga manager Artur Jorge was quoted as saying post-match. “We showed the character needed at this level of competition.”
All eyes now turn to Thursday’s fixtures, where the remaining seven last-16 ties will be decided. In one of the headline clashes, Aston Villa will defend a slender 1-0 lead against French club Lille at Villa Park. A goal from Ollie Watkins in the first leg has given the Premier League side a slight advantage as they chase a third consecutive year in a European quarter-final.
Other key Thursday matches include the conclusion of the all-Italian tie between Roma and Bologna, locked at 1-1 after the first leg, and the second leg between FC Midtjylland and Nottingham Forest, where the Danish side holds a 1-0 advantage.
Sevilla’s Shadow Looms Large
As the current contenders battle for a place in the last eight, they are all chasing the legacy of the competition’s most successful club. According to historical records, Sevilla FC of Spain holds the record for most Europa League titles with seven, including a remarkable three-peat from 2014 to 2016. They are also one of only two clubs, alongside Real Madrid (1985, 1986), to have successfully defended the trophy.
The Spanish side is not in contention this season, having finished third in their Champions League group and transferring to the UEFA Europa Conference League knockout stage.
The eight quarter-finalists will be confirmed by the end of play on Thursday, 19 March 2026. The draw for the next round is scheduled for Friday, 20 March 2026, at UEFA headquarters in Nyon, Switzerland.
