Hofstra Pride Returns to March Madness Amid Campus Milestones and Controversy

HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. — For the first time in a quarter-century, the Hofstra University men’s basketball team is dancing in the NCAA Tournament, facing the Alabama Crimson Tide in a first-round matchup today, 20 March 2026. The return to “March Madness” headlines a busy period for the Long Island university, which is also grappling with a lawsuit over ticket fees, hosting a national mathematics competition, and being named the most beautiful campus in the United States.

The 13th-seeded Pride will tip off against 4th-seeded Alabama this afternoon in Tampa, marking Hofstra’s fifth overall appearance in the tournament and its first since 2001. The game has captivated the New York metropolitan area, with the team’s return being celebrated across local and national sports media.

“March Madness is back at Hofstra University,” declared a report from PIX11, capturing the sentiment on campus. The Pride earned its spot by winning the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) tournament championship.

However, the athletic excitement has been tempered by a legal challenge. A Stony Brook father has filed a lawsuit against the university over what he calls “junk fees” attached to ticket purchases. According to the suit, two $12 women’s basketball tickets ballooned to $31 at checkout due to a $5 processing fee and other mandatory charges. The case, filed on 18 March, alleges deceptive pricing practices.

Beyond the basketball court, Hofstra is hosting its own intellectual version of March Madness. The university’s Mathematics Department is welcoming some of the brightest young mathematicians in the region for the 2026 USA Mathematical Olympiad, an event the university dubbed a “mathematical March Madness.”

In a separate accolade, Hofstra’s campus was recently voted the “Most Beautiful College Campus in the U.S.” in an online poll, beating out other picturesque institutions.

The university also held a dedication event for the Jeffrey M. Weiner Institute for Professional Services, honouring the generous Hofstra alumnus. Furthermore, the multi-award-winning campus radio station, WRHU, is set to be associated with the upcoming “TALKERS 2026: Radio’s Next Chapter” industry conference.

On the women’s side, the basketball season ended on Sunday when the 10th-seeded Pride fell 68-56 to top-seeded Charleston in their conference tournament final, missing a chance at their own NCAA bid.

University Background

Founded in 1935 as an extension of New York University, Hofstra gained independence in 1939. Today, it comprises ten schools and is known for its strong academic programmes. The Department of History, for example, offers a Bachelor of Arts major requiring a minimum of 30 semester hours, including advanced-level coursework, and features a Public History concentration. Students begin with introductory courses like “History 20: Why History Matters.”

As the Pride take the national stage today, the university finds itself at the centre of sports, academic, and cultural conversations—a fitting position for an institution once again in the March Madness spotlight.
